Used MP3 Player Sold with Secrets…
I was just cheking out one of my favorite places to catch up on Geek.com – and They had an article about an Person that bought a used MP3 Player and when he hooked it up to his computer – Thinking he might get some free MP3′s to play with – Insead he found he had detailed Military info and Plans instead.
I wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention that if you use your USB Stick or iPhone or MP3 Player or any removable device to make sure you secure your data on it – Just incase it gets stolen or misplaced (hey some of these devices are tiny) – and if you ever sell your mp3 player make sure you wipe it clean.
One of the best free programs to secure your data is TrueCrypt – See below for details of this software.
- Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
- Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.
- Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).
- Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
- Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:1) Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system.2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
- Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.
TrueCrypt – Is simple to use and very secure – I would highly recommend it if you store your passwords, personal data, or even if you carry your resume on it around. Who know what can happen to these tiny devices. Do you really want your information in the wrong hands?

Yes, You don’t need to wipe a USB Stick – But the portable units with harddrives need to be wiped clean when selling or giving them away. This is only for your protection and piece of mind. Again you don’t want your personal files showing up in the wrong hands.
